A Lesson from the Rapids
…do you know this feeling?
I spent a long time trying to get a photo saved from last weekend but it didn’t work…,
Yes, I tried everything.
If you have never been a pastor you will never know how often things like this “happen”, most often when you are trying to calm your soul and preach the Gospel.
This was one of those days!
So, let me give you a quick lesson on running white water from the many rapids I have run.
If and when you find yourself tossed out of water you are running the rapids in, immediately get yourself into “self-arrest mode”…this means feet first and on your back.
Why? Well I hope the “on your back” makes sense to you without explanation, and feet first so that you can push off the rocks. Keep your arms moving so that you stay in position. Eventually, you will end up in calm water, unless you are in crazy stuff and you should not be in!
This, beloveds, is how we stay in the presence of God.
Release the control and trust the Living Water to carry you to safety. Panicking does not help. Trust me.

The weather held off on us, as it likes to do, but the Spirit fell instead of the rain…again, as He likes to do.
We started the service praying over our beloved Brother Benson, or Greg if you don’t know his first name. Greg has been going through a lot of death and illness in his immediate family and beyond. He is a faithful member of our group and we wanted to support and honor him so we laid hands and prayed over him, them I got him a chair and another got him sweet tea and we set him up in the shade to simply soak in The Lord instead of pouring out as he always does.
A new couple was walking past as we were setting up so I invited them for sweet tea, then they began to play corn hole after I told them this was a safe place to relax, then the guy read one of the readings, and they both came up for prayer after I preached.
They wanted to get clean…
So I asked Chino who has twelve years clean and ran many NA meetings to pray over him…”Pastor, no no no, I don’t do that!”…. dude, you know how to pray to get and stay clean, what the heck are you talking about! So he prayed along with Maria who has 43 years sober…and she invited them to a meeting after another guy found one on his phone…
I had a message on honestly loving God and neighbor that led to many coming forward admitting they were still using or had unforgiveness in their hearts looking for prayer. It lasted a while so I offered up communion and folks just coming, and coming, and coming…
As we were wrapping up, our friend Matthieu came up to tell us he was headed back to France this week and this was his last time at Street Church. He found us one day last year as he was walking around the city playing his guitar and worshipping Jesus and became part of the family.
We prayed over him, and he prayed over us, and just like that The Street Church sent a friend off over seas again… like we did with my kid when she went to the Dominican Republic, Ola when she returned to Poland, me on my trips, UCONN students when they graduated….
Word spreads across the globe of what God is doing here, and He is making himself famous for what He doing.
Community Church updates!
Lovely time at River Ridge this past week as we gathered in the memory unit. Ellien Finn joined us as we sang and prayed and had communion. I never tire of watching folks who are deep in confusion sing and pray along, and part lips because they want communion. Keep praying or the widows, especially for the Friday service at The Brookdale Community Church as Karen will be leading!
