Teaching People to Fish

…but how do you disciple people?…

We get asked that question a lot.

It seems as if most followers of Jesus have been discipled (apprenticed) in the faith in one of two ways;

  1. Through their church’s “discipleship class”

  2. “knee-to-knee” or “life-on-life”

The first method is the structured sit-down formal class where information is passed along. This consists primarily of what that particular body of believers believes, and how members should personally behave.

The second method is a formal “informal” method where a mature follower of Jesus will form an intentional relationship with a new/newer follower and have more personal and intimate conversations about how to live and what to believe.

Our goal in disciple making is to disciple people to disciple people who disciple people…

It’s not about information, but teaching them how to BE a follower. We invite them into community where they see us teach the Bible, pray for the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, baptize new believers, and then teach THEM how to do and do the same.

…and they do…

My wife and I followed this model with our kids growing up, and they are replicating it.

One of the directors of an assisted living facility watched me do it for years, and she gathered her community at her new facility.

Last week our friend brought his friend to Street Church because his friend brought him..and he recommitted his life to Jesus.

A young man who was discipled in a summer program by Valley Brook has become one of our leaders, and I released him to baptize his friend last week.

The goal of discipleship is NOT make church members or good moral people.

The goal of discipleship is to train disciples how to disciple disciples so that they go out proclaiming the Kingdom of God has come near and teach the new believers how to go and do the same…

Street Church Worship

Hello family,

The August 19th service was a Holy Spirit filled day. Some came up for prayer. Tyquan was baptized and he came back with me to assist Arthur, a helpful and dedicated young man, and another young man.  May God bless them.

Pastor Tim preached (my pastor) and a few members of my church served the beverages.  They were so excited to help and were really moved about how the Street Church shared the love of Christ!  Wintonbury Church members were there as as usual brought with them the love of Christ.   It was an easy day to prepare the van as Wintonbury Church met us downtown with prepackaged lunch bags ! Awesome!

Pastor Bryan ,Julia, Curtís and Brother Benson were there.  I drove the van, and I am convinced that the drivers on the highway know that it was involved in doing God's work as no one was unkind and patiently allowed me to drive and change lanes safely!

Blessings to you all,

Cynthia

Community Church updates!

…and then there was one more, and that was it!

I was contacted by a friend who reached out to me a few years ago asking if I would be willing to bring a service to her people in a memory unit. She is a new facility and wanted to bring us in, knowing how impactful the ministry is. Please join in welcoming the 7th (and last!) Community Church of the Street Church Family

On another note, we give a huge shout out to Karen Cupit and her boys for dancing along with the worship last week at The Clairbridge Comminty Church @ Brookdale. It was like a “Dance Dance Revolution” competition for Jesus!
