The Best "Holy Huddles"
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16
Oftentimes at Street Church, we ask that people don’t form “Holy Huddles.” Sometimes when people come as a group, especially if it’s their first time, they tend to congregate together away from everyone else. There they find safety, comfort, and protection in an unfamiliar environment. Perhaps that’s been you; It’s only natural. But in forming that “Holy Huddle,” we’ve found that it prevents people from stepping out of their comfort zone and into the full blessing that God has for them that day.
What we witnessed on Saturday was a different kind of “Holy Huddle” - one that we cannot encourage enough. Even though the temperature was in the teens, or more likely because of it, we saw groups of people gathering in prayer in numbers we haven’t seen before. Bryan even remarked, “Look at all of the people praying.”
As you look closer, you’ll see people from all different backgrounds - racially, ethnically, socio-economically, geographically - praying and conversing with one another. Nobody is greater or less than anybody else. Everyone is made in the image of God and has gifts God has given uniquely to them in order for the Body of Christ - the church - to function on earth. This is the vision of The Kingdom of Heaven that we most long to see at Street Church. We’re just a bunch of people following Jesus helping one another along in this crazy world on the path towards Heaven.

Service
It was a frigid day today - definitely the coldest of the year with temps in the teens (and maybe colder with the wind chill). The Cupits, Ruth and Jeff helped pack lunches and load up the van, which was huge. We finished early, and Bryan and I went to Stop and Shop to grab some cupcakes and balloons for a few birthdays to celebrate (Eric and Chris).
Upon arrival downtown, Charlie, Dr. B, Malaree and Vanessa were waiting for us. We had a few others join us and as we setup, more came.
Service itself was windy and cold. We gave out extra hand/toe warmers in the lunch bags, and had some on the coffee table to give to everyone. Eric came and we celebrated his birthday! He was so grateful and joyful. Bryan gave the message and was impressed with the thought that everyone who was there wanted to be there because they love Jesus and Street Church. Nobody is out in 15-degree weather "just because." Everyone was paying attention and afterwards we saw some great prayer huddles form. I noticed Julia connected someone with Isis as well, and there was prayer happening. It's great when we can connect folks with our friends who are in the nitty-gritty with them.
We had lunch and gave out socks. It was a good day at church with our friends.

Community Church updates!
Lovely service this week at West Hartford Health and rehabilitation. Our friends always humble me there, such as asking for prayers to remain strong in faith after an amputation. The weather was awful but that just meant donuts in the “church parking lot” with the church beach cart!
On another front (literally), our family has helped these Ukrainian Chaplins serve the boys and the villagers in the front line. They epitomize our mission of preparing a table in the presence of our enemies and getting Jesus to those who cannot get to the church
