Easter at Street Church

Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

John 19:41-42

As we enter into Easter Week, we want to be intentional about experiencing all of the pain, suffering, heartache, compassion and ultimately joy that Jesus went through in His final days on Earth. Those on the leadership team will be attending services on Thursday and Friday, and we encourage you to do the same. Message us if you’d like any recommendations.

As for Saturday, we will be holding our usual service on the front steps of City Hall. While we will certainly celebrate the resurrection, we don’t want to get too far ahead and rush to it. As Bryan’s pastor in seminary said: “Don’t rush to Easter. Let your people sit alone in the tomb with dead Jesus.”

And so we will. The Saturday before Easter was the darkest day the universe has ever experienced. It’s the only day Jesus never was. Join us as we build upon the crescendo of Easter Week, and transition from the world’s darkest day to its brightest day.

Service (from Bryan)

I wasn't an "official lead" this week but wanted to help out Crystal and let Geoff focus on the message. WIntonbury Church served with us as part of their "go week" where they focused on Mission. They had packed all the lunches and loaded the entire van in something like 30 minutes....but rain was in the forecast, and since we had extra time, we unloaded the boxes and covered them in plastic bags to keep them dry. There was a huge team so it went quick and it saved Geoff, Crystal and I an hour our wiping out all the crates when we unloaded. Of course, Geoff rebuked the rain in the name of Jesus so it only rained a bit early!

Downtown, the team set up quickly and jumped right in. Both of the speakers gave their last valiant attempt. They served us well. Crystal did a great job pulling the team together and encouraging the readers and offering a bit of insight after the Scripture was read. Geoff started off a little scattered (his words) with the wind blowing his bible and making him loose his place, but once he got down to preaching, it flowed with the power that comes from a man who has been with Jesus.

Two young first time folks from Wintonbury helped hand out communion and the line was long again. A number of people during the closing circle remarked how the prayer sheets really helped encourage people to pray with a focus, and how each person read and was active.

One of the families from 180 Life Church came down with Chicken Stew, not soup, and he was amazed that he went through all of it. He brought "to go" containers not thinking he would run out! Our friend from Myanmar was sharing videos of back home after the earthquake and he was unusually despondent.  Pray for him.

As we were wrapping up, a young man approached me and showered me with thanks and blessings for what we do with authentic love, and tears began to streak his face. I called him aside along with Br Benson and as he shared we prayed the Holy Spirit fell HARD on him with refreshment. We we were through, two new first time folks were waiting and asked me if I could pray for them and I simply asked Jonathon to pray over them..." I don't pray as good as you" he said, and I told him I asked him to pray, not pray good... and the Spirit of God came upon him in force, so much so that the two other men were weeping.

An amazing day,

-b

FROM THE COMMUNITY CHURCHES

There was a new receptionist at the front desk and our monthly visit did not make it into the community calendar, nevertheless, we made our way upstairs only to find the walls empty of everything even room numbers. The residents were all in one room as the community room was being painted too... and the memory care coordinator was surprised to see us.

We all crowded into a room and I stood between the two and Andrea, Eileen, Mary and I sang Gospel and our friends joined along in worship.

There was joy. SO much joy today. Nothing can keep back the joy of the Lord

What a great day! Ruth, her dad, and Bryan got everything together at storage. They headed downtown and were greeted by a great throng of people waiting to help out.

As we finished setting up, I noticed a new guy standing in the middle of everything, observing what was happening. I introduced myself, learned his name was Will, and started talking to him. He mentioned he is currently living at a shelter, was walking to the library, and decided to stop and see what was happening here. I told him it was a church and asked if he was a Christian. He said he grew up Catholic but fell away for a long time. However, he was having the sense in the last few weeks that God was telling him it was "time to come home." I invited him to stay for service, and he did.

We had a great time of readings. For the sermon, Ruth shared her testimony. What a powerful story. She told of her parents making the heart crushing story to give up her and her brother for adoption to an aunt and uncle so they could flee Haiti before it was too late; of the abuse she suffered under her own family in America, and the love her ESL teacher showed her, and the food that the librarian would provide her, and the love from her boss who would drive her home in the winter so she would not have to walk in the winter; of her brother's frat who let him live for free, and the landlord who allowed Ruth to join him in the summer so she would not he homeless. It was a story of pain and suffering BUT GOD showed His love, care, grace, and affection through it all. We were all so thankful for God giving Ruth the courage to share her story in front of the church. Thank you Ruth

Afterwards during our time of prayer, I went back to our new friend Will and asked him if he would like to receive Christ today. He said yes! We brought him to the front of the church and baptized him in the name of the father, son, and Holy Spirit.

We had a great family lunch and everyone hang extra long because it was such a joyful, peaceful time in the Spirit.

Blessings,

-Kenny

(From Bryan)

"Before people arrive, I want to tell you I'm Jewish but believe we all worship the same god but with different names".... I just smiled and said I believe differently but everyone is welcome to stay. With lots of changes we had four with us for the service and had to hold it in a very open room which was fine because everyone coming and going joined us in song... including two staff who never left.

I had to get over myself because my new friend was a legit actress in movies and on the stage. When I hear stories in assisted living facilities I take them with a grain of salt until I figure it out. She was the deal and showed me her clip in that classic movie, "Warriors"... "I was in the Lizzies, the only girl gang in the movie. I had one line; 'shoot him! shoot him!'“  IYKYK

I preached a Spirit-filled message and handed out communion. When I got to her (I had explained it was the Seder Meal) I told her it was for those who believed Jesus was the Messiah.... "I believe that" she said, and we I taught her how to take communion with me.

Worship so hard your feet cramp

Then one of them, when he saw he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He fell with his face to the ground at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. (Now he was a Samaritan.) Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to turn back and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to the man, “Get up and go your way. Your faith has made you well.”

Luke 17:15-19

Thankful for those who keep showing up to worship and be among us as a thank-offering for the grace they have received from Jesus.

Service

My first interaction that morning was with Jody as she stopped by to donate a jacket that we could hand out that morning. Storage packing was a breeze! Three men from 180 Life Church in West Hartford (Josiah, Bryce, and Keith) showed up alongside Geoff. Made my life easier!

We had great help downtown with members from 180 Life Church serving alongside volunteers from Vox and Wintonbury. Geoff brought tasty donuts and we did forgo using the tents due to the wind and that was a good idea because it was windy and cold!

Overall, all was calm and beautiful as Geoff led us off with Scripture readings and then handed it over to me for the message. I spoke about what it looks like to be a disciple who is being transformed by Jesus. We are not called to simply be a Christian, we are called to be disciples! A disciple is someone who is following Jesus, being changed by Jesus, and committed to the mission of Jesus.

We spent time in prayer and young Evangeline helped hand out communion. The day couldn't have gone better and it was over before we knew it!
Blessings,

Crystal

From the Community Churches

I had an A-MAZING weekend serving as the speaker for Black Rock Church’s winter youth retreat! Such a honor and joy to be with this ruckus, faith-filled part of the Family of God. 150 students and a small horde of leaders doused in the Holy Spirit and I got to toss a match on the whole pile! I was talking to one of the freshman boys over breakfast and he told me his feet were killing him during worship last night because he was jumping so much…

“So I prayed and asked God to take the pain so I could keep praising him, and if not, I would still praise him anyway! And guess what! A minute later the pain was gone!”…. his face was plastered in a grin…

Then his friend next to him was complaining that his legs were hurting today but that was ok….

This is what happens when you worship and dance like the redeemed children we are! You get cramps and strain your muscles during worship!

Then it was back to the local community churches at Brookdale and River Ridge… they praised just as hard as arthritic hands clapped in praise and feet tapped out the time on the foot rests of their wheel chairs.

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”

Service

Easy day at storage with lunches packed. We had a big van and handed out socks so there was plenty of room.

Got downtown to a smaller group but as always God brings who and what we need and never misses a beat. Geoff is giving lots of time and it has been a huge blessing to us all. A young woman named Nellee showed up who was a very dedicated regular from pre-COVID days as well as two men who had not been there for years. "You still here doin' this?!" is a testimony to all who join us each week.

Young Sebastian read this week, that kid is so great. His mom caught me after the service and mentioned that he told her that he is not sure about church at times, but he believes what we believe, that every person is made in the image of God and worthy of respect. Amen to that, young follower of Jesus.

We did have a rather loud and drunk woman shouting about Trump and other things at the start of the service, and although no one mentioned sexuality at all in the mic, during prayer before communion she came and loudly repented of her homoxesuality with lots of tears. A missionary friend of Br Benson's and I prayed over her and clearly she had some demonic activity under the addictions and lust. She was quiet after that.  I am amazed how satan dries to distract us but it keeps going,

Geoff brought the officer who led him to faith and I gave him room to share their testimony. It was powerful, and many came for healing prayer after he ended. A large group gathered around them and prayed.

I invited Willie who is with us weekly to help with communion. I was encouraged to continue asking others to rotate in and help.

Great week. I'll be away but praying for you all,

B

“I look upon all the world as my parish; thus far I mean, that, in whatever part of it I am, I judge it meet, right, and my bounden duty to declare unto all that are willing to hear, the glad tidings of salvation. This is the work which I know God has called me to; and sure I am that His blessing attends it.”

Last week I kept running into Street Church friends all over, but my favorite was seeing Micheal after I came out of the gym. We wanted to proudly show me he was wearing his Street Church sweatshirt. Preach on, brother, preach on!
