Staying True to the Call

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth:

It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Matthew 13:31-22

The only true test of a word of prophecy we are told is that it comes to fruition. I was clearly given the assignment to form what is now known as the Street Church some time ago….

Like the Israelites, we spent time in the desert being prepared to become ourselves.

…a place where boundaries between believers are dropped and hope is restored, where captives are set free, and the smashed up get put back together.

Service

…again, the weather was perfect!

So thankful for Karen, Louise, Joy, and Sean who came to help bag up lunches and load the truck. You are always welcome to join us at storage, 10:30 am at 164 South Street in West Hartford.

I pulled up in the van and we had an encounter with a person who was very upset with me after I called him out for getting monetary assistance from volunteers. He was very loud. Please, please, please do not under any circumstances give any personal gifts away. Thanks…

God was with us, and we got through a loud start to a peaceful service. Pastor Josh from Faith Baptist in Enfield came by with his two teenage sons wanting to see what it was all about. Chi chi and Royal, Louise, Joy and Sean, Sandaya, and Curtis and Liz (aka Hollywood) helped out.

I preached on the parable of the 10 virgins with the lamps, and how we are called to live lives in constant expectation of the promised return of Jesus. I was aware of drawing closer to the gathered community, it felt more like I was talking to myself as well.  This community knows what it’s like to wait.

The lunch line grew as always, and distribution of everything was smooth. Joy had her pot of blessing and we feasted! As we were finishing a young distraught mother came through with her baby who had been in the ED that night with her child. Joy spoke with her about working with Husky Insurance (state assistance) and it was clear that she was being truthful. Very thankful for Joy and Chi Chi who ministered to her in a powerful way.  We helped her as we will when a clear need is presented to us.

As we were packing up a semi-regular  began yelling at a woman and it turned into him cussing me and others with racial slurs. This can be his personality at the drop of a hat. I told him not here and racism has no place among us.  He left cussing and yelling about respect. I know it can be uncomfortable at times, but this is the call. We remained calm and didn’t escalate and he left. God always has our back.

Phew.

Community Church updates!

We had a Spirit-led service at Brookdale Community Church. One of the staff came to faith during the communion distribution. These services are as much for the staff as it is for the residents. CNA’s do an awful lot of work most often for a small wage and many work weekends out of necessity…. so we are their one and only church
